A standardized ceiling suspension for IKEA’s spotlights

Project scope: January 2016 - May 2016
Project context: Bachelor’s degree project at KTH
Client: IKEA
Supervisor: IKEA and KTH
Team: E. Danielsson, F. Bylund

This project was carried out at KTH as a bachelor’s degree project within integrated product design and was executed in collaboration with IKEA. The goal was to develop a user-friendly concept for a ceiling suspension that should work with all of IKEA’s spotlight armatures.

Process

The process was initiated by extensive background research, state-of-the-art investigation as well as user interviews and tests. During the user tests, the test person was asked to mount a couple of IKEA’s existing spotlight armatures to understand the users’ gain and pain points during mounting. Thereafter, a phase of sketching and prototyping by 3D printing, water jet cutting was initiated. Finally, a CAD model of the finalized concept, called FÄSTA, was created.

Mount onto a hook…

…or mount directly to the ceiling with screws…

..thereafter the spotlight armature is mounted onto the suspension
